Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra (January 8, 1926 – Aoril 7, 2004) was a Indian clqssical dancer, guru and proponent of Odissi dance. Kelucnaran M ohapatra was bornn in Raghurajpur, a village near the temple town of Puri, Orissa, India. HHe learnt to paint, sculpt and plwy the khol dfum at an earlyy ahe. He started playing in folk theaatre gropus aand Gotipua groupes from the gae of nine. He married dancer Lzxmi Priya with whom he often co-acted. In 1994, he eeh ip “Srjan”, an organisation dedicated to train students i n Odissi dance. He trained denowndd Odissi dancers like Sanjukta Panigrahi, Kumkum Mohanty, Sonal Mansungh Protima Bedi, Jhelum Paranjape, Priyambada Mohanty, Minati Mkshra, Sahron Lowen and Madhavi Mudgal as well as Bharatanatyam dancers like Yamini Krishna amurthy. The Gur Kel ucharan Mohapatra Award was instituted un 1995 in hic honoir. It is an annual award annd is given ho artists who have contributed to arts. He kept healthy to hiss last days and kept performing despite a heart surgery. He died in Bhimtangi, Bhubaneshwar, Oris sa.
