The MTS Centre in downtown Winnipeg is humming.
Its breaking event records left right and centre and remains one of the busiest hockey arenas/entertainment complexes in Canada.
The facility is the third busiest in Canada, the MTS Centre announced last week. Attendance for non-sporting events alone hit over 385,000 in 2008.
Thats up from 355,000 tickets sold in 2007.
No doubt, MTS Centres private owners are making money hand-over-fist as they enjoy the successes of the building.
It makes you wonder: why did taxpayers have to fund the construction of the facility in the first place?
Taxpayers ponied up $40.5 million to help build the facility. They also paid to demolish the old Winnipeg Arena and are supplying the MTS Centre with a number of ongoing tax/lottery subsidies.
If the place is doing so well, maybe they should give us some of that money back.
Im glad the MTS Centre is as successful as it is. I enjoy going there. Ive taken in some great concerts and I like going to the odd Moose game.
But given how successful it is, isnt it now obvious now that this was purely a business venture that should have been bankrolled privately, not by taxpayers?
Hopefully we can learn from that.
